Sibling Rivalry 2.0 - Another "The Chooser Sux" Program
How often do you use the Chooser to connect to an AppleShare server
volume, and then realize that you need another volume on that same
server? Often if you mount one volume, you will want to mount the
related volumes at some time.
Enter Sibling Rivalry. After it is installed, you can Command-Click on
the Finder icon for an AppleShare server volume (not an alias) and a
popup menu will appear that lists the other volumes on that server
(it's "siblings"). If you select the name of a sibling from the menu,
Sibling Rivalry will automatically mount that volume on your computer.
Features:
* Sibling Rivalry has no interface... it takes up no space on your
screen, since it only appears after you specifically invoke it.
* You can mount *every* sibling on a server by adding the Option
key to the Command-Click sequence, and selecting "All Volumes".
* Its FAT software (both 68K and PPC native).
* It sure beats accessing the Chooser... probably one of the most
annoying functional interfaces on the Mac.
* It's got pretty colors... corresponding to the assigned volume
labels. (OK, I admit that its a frill.)
Un-features:
* Requires System 7.0 or later and the Finder Scripting Extension.
FSE comes bundled with AppleScript 1.1, with System 7.5, or
standalone at:
http://www.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/
US/Macintosh/System/Other_System/Finder_Scripting_Ext1.2.sea.hqx
* The FAT version is a bit larger (well 18k) than the simple 68K
version, so install whichever one makes you happy.
* The Finder typically treats the Command Key as a "Snap-to-Grid"
command -- which sounds like a conflict. Since Sibling Rivalry looks
for the Command key at mouse down, and the snap-to-grid checks the
status of the Command key at mouse up. After a little practice,
its easy to use and master.
This software was originally created as a MacHack in '93, but l let it
lie dormant for 2 years because of software limitations. Since then,
Apple has given the Finder a voice through FSE, and I was able to
rewrite the code and make it work!
The software is free to use and redistribute on any medium. Mail me any
comments or suggestions that occur to you.
